The future of fiber optics

The Internet is an integral part of human life. Nowadays it is impossible to imagine how people could work, communicate, learn new information and watch online films being in own home without the network. Nevertheless, not all people know that fast data transmission is the result of the optical fiber cable using.

The fiber optic technology continues to develop and now fiber cables are the only way of connection that is able to transmit data at rates of 50Gb/s that are extremely higher than in typical network applications.

There are two types of optical fibers: multimode and single-mode fibers. The cable of multimode fiber has a large diametral core that enables multiple modes of light to pass. This ability allows transmitting huge data at a short period. It should be mentioned that the multimode fiber system uses and will use parallel optics as the preferable technology at least the next 20 years because of the following reasons:

  • the low cost that is lower than the cost of SWDM transceivers because of the additional materials, assembly stages etc;
  • a cost-benefit of multimode fiber systems is higher;
  • eye safety of multimode fibers is better. WDM devices emit high optical power levels because of their high insertion loss.

As for single-mode fiber, its cable has a quite small diametral core due to which just one mode of light is able to pass.  This ability enables to transfer the signal further than multimode cable can. The advantages of single mode fiber cables include:

  • high bandwidth capacity;
  • limited data dispersion and external interference;
  • fast transmission speed.

Also, there was an opinion that finally, multimode fiber system would be replaced by single-mode fiber due to the price of the used transceivers. It means that transceivers for single-mode fiber system are more expensive than for multimode one, and a significant cost reduction is not expected relative to multimode transceivers for the numerous reasons.

Moreover, fiber optic is worldwide used for laser manufacture, and even in this case, single-mode lasers are more expensive than multimode laser systems. The higher cost is explained by expensive total channel cost despite the fact that single-mode fiber is highly cheaper than multimode one. Thus, high cost is the main and only disadvantage.

Now fiber cables differ from each other by their density, bandwidth, latency and form factors. Herewith, fiber cable systems with small diameters find more fields of application. In the future, it is planned that this type of cables will be cheaper and easy-to-install.
